If I ask if you are working with an agent there is a reason for my question..

March 31st, 2009 · No Comments · first time home buyers, macomb county MI, tips for home buyers

…and the reason I ask is that I’m not just being nosey.

I know callers can be put off by that question but there is an honest to goodness  reason why I ask if you have an agent that is working for you.  It’s called buyers agency and in Michigan for quite some time agency relationships for consumers who are purchasing a home or selling a home have been mandated by state law.

When I am working with a prospective client I want you to know whom I am working for – is it the seller?  Or am I working for you?   I’m sure you want to know the answer to that question also.

If you should call to view a home, or email me from my search for homes website  to set an appointment and I ask you “Are you working with an agent?” please don’t take offense.  I must ask this question.

If you are currently working with someone then I cannot step on that other agents toes and enter the picture.  Many other agents feel that if you don’t have a buyer agency contract with someone then you are not truly being represented but I have a difficult time with that argument.  If an agent has spent their time, their money, their resources to work on your behalf then they deserve to continue without interference unless you fire them.

I wrote an article not long ago about buyers agency in Michigan and how it can benefit you (especially if you are a first time home buyer).   If you are curious about what a buyers agent does for you then please read it.
