One of the joys about living in Macomb County MI is the presence of Selfridge airfield - a joint military use base. When my boys were younger we used to love to sit outside our home in Chesterfield Township and watch as the planes and jets took off on the weekends for their pilots training and other missions.
I’ve often wondered how many in Macomb County don’t know about the Selfridge Air Museum?
(The picture to the left is of the gate entrance off Hall Road -M 59 & Jefferson at the Harrison Township -Chesterfield Township border.) Stay to the right hand side to receive a pass to enter the base.
The Selfridge Air Museum is open on the weekends through the end of October from noon until 4:30 p.m.
At the M-59 / Hall Road entrance if you stay in the far right hand lane you will see the new visitors building. You can go inside there to receive a pass to proceed to the museum, or stop at the guard gate and ask one of the friendly people there. They’ll be glad to help you gain access to the base to visit the museum.
Here’s a sneak preview of some of the planes on display at the museum.
This week I’ll try to take some photos up close (and inside the gates!) After I’ve asked permission of course…wouldn’t want the friendly people at Selfridge to think I’m up to something I shouldn’t be!
